Upeksha

The art and discipline of "stepping back"

Clearing one's mind and current emotions to allow for awareness and growth. Real growth, change and a maturing of character through connectedness, awareness and willful consciousness. This is the practice of Upeksha yoga by Lawrance

I have had the opportunity to be guided by Lawrance. His class is something both subtle and powerful. It has had an alchemic effect on my yoga practice and life. I'm grateful to have had him as a teacher and a friend in my early days of practice.

From Luna Liang

Lawrence’s class/workshop are pretty awesome. I joined the both and learned a lot from him.

He knows well about human anatomy and applied it to Yoga class, which helped the students have a better understanding on the body structure and find an right way to open it effectively.

Sometimes I was struggling in a pose with all the energy, but still can’t do it well. Lawrence just said a sentence, like “put your tailbone out which can create space”. Suddenly all contractions in the pose were gone. His guidance makes me realized in Yoga practice pushing hard is useless if your gesture is against your body, while following an scientific way is a key to help you go deeper.

During the teaching, he likes to bring life to the mat. He tried to let us understand we are not just practicing yoga, but also practicing the life. The deeper we go into our body, the more we know about life. He kept asking us “Stay open, stay challenge”. After a year practice with him, I have to acknowledge that he is so right when body is open, mind starts open too.

Last but not least, I love the stories that he usually shares at beginning of class, which showed us how he applied Yoga principle to life. As the proverb goes “People do what you do instead of what you say”, those stories inspired me to re-look at my life and do the same.

Years of practicing Upeksha Yoga:
6 months

When was the first time I knew Upeksha Yoga:
6 months ago when I attended Lawrence's yoga class at Pure Yoga HK

Which workshops I attended:

- Upeksha Yoga: Eye of the Tiger from 12 - 30 May 2014 @Pure Yoga HK

- Upeksha Yoga: Grace on 16 & 23 Aug 2014 @ Pure Yoga HK

Key benefits:

Upeksha Yoga encourages us to pause and step back to see a bigger picture both in our asana practice on the mat and in our life off the mat. Only when we slow down we can look within ourselves and allow our body and soul to speak to us.

I found Upeksha Yoga beneficial for everybody from beginners to advanced yoga practitioners because Lawrence often asks us to start from the basics, which give us the foundation for advanced postures. In Upeksha Yoga classes, we attempted challenging postures to explore our bodies and get ourselves out of our comfort zone and at the same time we are given space to pause to discover how we feel in ourselves and refine in our poses. At the beginning of each class, Lawrence provides us with a theme from his personal stories and reflections to focus on during our practice and to contemplate and reflect on after class.

One important reason I enjoy Lawrence's classes so much is that he teaches from his own experience (and from his heart also!). His unique way of guiding students in poses is clear and easy to understand and makes challenging poses easier for all levels. When I first attended his elementary level class, I was surprised to find how inspiring his class is even though I have been practicing yoga for years.

No matter which level you are at, you would discover yourself more and learn something new through Upeksha Yoga. I wholeheartedly recommend Upeksha Yoga and Lawrence's classes to everyBODY.

I have witnessed the transition of Lawrence from a devoted student to his current state as a enlightened teacher. It has been gratifying to experience how he has taken the essence of his teachers and evolved into his unique style and approach with Upeksha. His teaching style can be characterized by attention to details to ensure a safe and precise practice and yet maintaining a smooth and dynamic flow. I hope to continue to grow my practice under his guidance.

By attending Upeksha Yoga’s workshops I was able to develop clear and attainable goals for my yoga practice. I would complete a workshop with the necessary tools to continue working on my goals in my everyday practice.

I have attended a number of Upeksha Yoga’s workshops and I always leave feeling transformed. He has a deep knowledge of physical alignment and combines this with being fully present in the heart to take the practitioner to deeper levels in his/her practice. Lawrence infuses humour (and music?) with attention to detail, positive encouragement and illuminating demonstration to create meaningful experiences you can take with you off the mat in and into the world.

I’ve known Lawrence for many years and it’s recently through his Tiger workshop that we reconnected. What attracted me to attend his workshop was, his total dedication to yoga. He has gone beyond a yoga teacher. From attending his classes and knowing him personally, he is yoga on and off the mat. Lawrence’s attention to details and his precise instruction for alignment give us a lot of insight in our yoga practice. He constantly reminds us how to align ourselves for better strength and better practice and to protect ourselves from injuries. There is a lot of explanation on the physical level. Beyond that, he always reminds us of the purpose of practicing yoga, which is not only about postures. The questions he raises make me ponder how I can integrate yoga into my everyday life. I always walk away from the yoga room feeling joy from within. It makes me want to keep coming back

I have attended many workshops and learned many different styles of yoga. So far Upeksha Yoga offers the good balance of challenging myself but at the same time allowing me to practice in peace. I am very grateful for this. Thank you Lawrence for being there. I highly recommend his classes and workshops for all.

From Morgan Tan

Lawrence's Upeksha workshops is a summation of his teachings, insights, and asana techniques edited from his many classes over the years as a teacher (who happens to be mine for as long as I have practiced yoga). For me, his workshops are about "stepping back and seeing the bigger picture" in everything we do, and asking ourselves "what is it that we are trying to achieve here?" One learns the importance of "pausing" and finding space within ourselves so that we can move further from where we are.  We also learn there is no need to rush into that next pose because the journey of forming the general pose first, then finetuning through mindful alignment and breaths is an experience bearing more significance than the asana itself.

Throughout the class, one cannot help but realize that Lawrence is teaching us a principle best expressed when practiced off the mat in our daily lives.  Having upeksha in all that we do - by seeing the big picture we learn to accept, let some things go and be a better version of ourselves through the process. This is what I find most powerful.  The workshop incorporates both teachings for the body and mind for all.

I was a yoga newbie when I took up Upeshka yoga in 2014. I learned of this course shortly after joining the Pure Causeway Bay yoga studio.

This course sparked my practice, which is ongoing. Even during this course, I noticed positive changes in my body. Lawrence’s upeshka yoga course taught me the application of yoga in our daily lives, the mind/body connection and the power of focus. Lawrence’s teaching approach was friendly and professional. This made the course very enjoyable. I would highly recommend this course to yoga practitioners of all levels.
